Fall Arrest Lanyards or Shock Absorbing Lanyards are manufactured and tested to the EN355 standard. They should be used for applications where the potential for a fall to occur is unavoidable and there is a requirement to limit the fall forces that may be excerpted on a workers' body.
Fall Arrest Lanyards are usually made from Polyamide Rope or Webbing which offer high breaking strengths. The end with the Shock Absorber should be connected at the Harness Anchorage Point. These absorber packs are either sealed in a clear plastic cover or have a material cover with a zip or velcro so that it can be fully inspected annually and before each use.
Fall Arrest Lanyards have a choice of connectors/karabiners on either end. For example, if you are connecting to EyeBolts then a simple karabiner or snap hook will suffice. If your Anchor Points vary in size then a Scaffold Hook offers greater flexibility of where to connect to.
When choosing a Fall Arrest Lanard it is imperative that you calculate the Fall Clearance required for the application. If the Lanyard length is too long this could result in serious injury to the User.
Where the Fall Clearance is limited you should consider a Personal Fall Limiter Device instead. These are a cost effective alternative to Shock Absorbing Lanyards.
Most textile PPE products, such as Fall Arrest Lanyards, have a life cycle of 10 years from date of manufacture (provided they have been inspected by a competent individual/company on an annual basis).
